Were you one of the people in the 1960s agitating against hard science, who wanted a kinder-gentler science, a more inclusive and expansive science? It took a while, yet here it is.

Re Jessica Grogan‘s Encountering America: Humanistic Psychology, Sixties Culture, and the Shaping of the Modern Self (2012)

Jessica competently frames Humanistic Psychology 1955-1975 but begs off articulating it with later progressive developments such as Touch for Health. Circumscribing her topic was surely a good for her book; yet, obscures how what I call Humanistic Psychology 1.0 (HP 1.0) evolved into Humanistic Psychology 2.0, mostly thru developments in Energy Medicine; coupled with, a widespread desire for a tradition-neutral ecumenical spirituality, embodied most characteristically in the enthusiastic expansion of Unity Churches in the 1990s.

Jessica leaves readers of her book with a sense we have “been there, done that” regarding HP 1.0 and all the cultural hope this activity embodied for those involved at the time. Jessica appears to be 25 or 30. I think only a younger person, born after HP 1.0 ended could have written a book shutting the door on this activity and write “finished” on it.

Writing how HP 1.0 evolved into Humanistic Psychology 2.0, is even more challenging. My 22 books in Best Practices in Energy Medicine teach me this continually. The big ideas from HP 1.0 did evolve; but often, in such small circles to make documentation appear no more than personal, subjective memoirs.

The Three Sciences we use everyday remedies the lack of theoretical foundation in Energy Medicine. It has the added advantage of building on Goethe, Rudolf Steiner and Ernst Lehrs (Man or Matter 3ed ed, 1985 preferred), three famous figures in holistic studies, our first modern holistic thinkers perhaps?

The Three Sciences makes “science” easier to understand and convey to lay persons as it points to three-fold activity each adult performs naturally in daily life. This perspective then serves to create adequate-sufficient perspective on runaway technology—for those looking for pespective.

HP 2.0 including Energy Medicine probably can’t go forward without an entirely new “garden plan” for everything we call “science.”

Mr. Google says the state of websites in the search string: [“energy medicine” history] is moribund, most with no new posts since 2009. Attempts at new sustainable common language for a HP 2.0 and Energy Medicine have come and gone, none sustaining much interest past initial marketing campaigns and book launches.

To design a new garden plan for all of science, it helps to face basic facts. The facts are radical: We use THREE orders of science every day.

Now there’s room for everyone’s view of science. Many conflicts simply evaporate, a common side-effect benefit of whole-brained thinking.

    1. First Order Science ~

Each Order of Science demonstrates wonderful intelligence. Cell-level-intelligence is the chief intelligence First Order Science points to. Cell-level-intelligence is demonstrated in the most wonderful way in the small intestine of every living animal who has one. Each little villi “finger” poking into the nutrient flow, inside of our small intestine, is a constant experimenter. As each nutrient flowing by is sensed, each villi asks, “Is this nutrient beneficial for me to take into my blood stream now–or not?”

Main discussion here

If our small intestine villi were not exercising cell-level-intelligence 24/7, what alternative do we have to assimilate nutrients? One of very few is intravenous tube feeding.

The genius of cell-level-intelligence is not “survival.” It’s “balance,” creating and maintaining internal homeostasis.

The fine-grained detail genius of First Order Science experimental method is primarily limited to the domain of one person, to each individual singally.

Capacity to focus on the needs of single individuals, down to the level of single nutrients and amino acids, makes this the ideal intelligence for our Immune System Self to use to operate and manage unconscious metabolic functions.

Genius to focus on the needs of single individuals, makes cell-level-intelligence ideal for self-healing, wellness, health enhancement and client support in healthcare—outside of accident and trauma medicine.

For crops of plant and herd animals taken as a group, Second-Order Science makes more sense. First Order Science supercedes Second Order Science when the concerns of individual animals, such as one horse or one human are at hand.

    1. Second Order Science ~

Second Order Science functions primarily in the domain of “What is it? How does it work? Is it safe? Can I trust it for me and my family-tribe?” If something works really well for survival; then, “How can I make another one like this?”

The genius of Second Order Science is physical-material survival. No Order of Science is better at creating and maintaining balance between single individuals, single families, single tribes (including corporations) and the demands of the physical-material world (including economics and world economics).

Second Order Science is the science of our middle self in the Three Selves. Conscious Waking Self is our most limited self by design, as described in the Three Selves. Our middle self has most ability to focus either down on greater detail (whole to part) or up to greater wholes (part to whole) and shut out extraneous input. This capacity enhances physical survival greatly.

This is the science of Island Man and Island Woman. Lehrs characterizes the limited science Island Man creates as “one-eyed, color-blind, pointer-reading science.” Such limited consensus is as much as a group of survival-minded conscious selves can come to collectively.

Second Order Science has major affinity with—and is often hijacked by–our limited survival-obsessed-ego. Our ego rationalizes endlessly to defend its physical survival obsession. Then it disguised its obsession as “profit-seeking” and “rent-seeking.”

    1. The origin of all “mad scientists”

When used obsessively and exclusively, in the absence of First and Third Order science methods, Second Order Science is the current source of the negatives of technology, the major factor limiting healthy face-to-face, live, in-person, interaction now; and, the major factor now limiting healthy connection with Nature and our own Divinity—however conceived individually.

Post-2001 the need to reign in the exaggerated dominance of Second Order Science is often spoken of in terms of rolling-back “Cartesian-Newtonian reductionism.” Used obsessively and compulsively (madly), Second Order Science reduces all problems to immediate survival and/or immediate profit.

Hence the chaos around response to global warming, a threat to survival—but also a threat to all profit-taking.

Our control-mad, survival-fanatic, highly stressed, triple-brained ego clings to Second Order Science. These are our “mad scientists.” Super-villains in comics and movies caricature this part of us so we can perceive it more clearly.

Role models of whole-brained thinking, Gandhi, MLKing and John-Roger, demonstrate what evolving past triple-brained stress looks like, what is beyond ambition to rule the world, beyond, “One ring to rule them all!”

    1. Third Order Science ~

Third Order Science is the most reflective and inquiry-oriented of the Three Sciences we use everyday. It asks:

– Do we have enuf resources today to meet the needs of all—or not?

– What constitutes the “commons”?

– What constitutes “private property”?

The question, “What is for the highest good of all concerned?” characterizes this science.

Let’s recall parents of children think like this daily, mothers and fathers imagining what is best for the children, for the family and possibly extended family.

A synonym for “Third-Order Science” is “whole-brained thinking.”

In Second Order Science, the question, “What is real here?” becomes, “What is for the highest good of all concerned, for the next seven generations?

Exercising such thinking requires a slower more relaxed tempo. A more comprehensive approach to collective needs is going to be more thoughtful and deliberative. Hence, the more inward, contemplative quality than either First or Second orders of science.

If a lot of people are stakeholders in a decision, thinking this way takes time. The main experiment is moving out of our own point of view, using our creative imagination to perceive from additional points of view and multiple perspectives.

    1. CONCLUSION Three Orders of science, we use every day

Using Goethe, Steiner and Lehrs, our view of science expands naturally into a clearer vision-model of three orders of science, we use every day.

Then there’s room for everyone’s view of science. Many conflicts simply evaporate (a common beneficial side-effect of whole-brained thinking).

Were you among those in the past agitating against hard science, wanting a kinder-gentler science, a more inclusive and expansive science? It took a while. Here it is.

Three Sciences we use everyday makes “science” not harder but easier to understand as it “fits” other three-fold activity so natural in our daily life.

    1. Distinct experimental method for each science

First Order Science ~

Each order of science has its own distinct intelligence and genius; so, it has its own characteristic general experimental method.

First Order Science general experimental method is easier to see in individual plants and individual animals and pets, not on human beings.

If “X” works for this tree, this pet alone, X only has to be true for this one being.  If X works for a neighboring tree or pet; that’s fine, we can celebrate this. If X does not work for the next tree or next pet, I still have what works for me; you still have what works for you. Our own experience of what works and what does not stays with the individual.

First-Order Science is therefore most natural for human healthcare. What works for me may or may not work for you.  If something works for both of us—for all of us–we can celebrate this.

The timeframe of First Order Science is all NOW. Individual intention, preferences and subjective state are all considered in “what works for me” and “what doesn’t now.” More broadly, John-Roger says, “If it works for you use it, if not, have the wit to let it go.”

In frequency, isolated Conscious Waking Self is far removed from Immune System Self. Conscious Self only experiences contentment in Immune System Self as a vague “sense of well being.”

HP 2.0 sides with Rudolf Steiner that human beings are not analogous to other mammals. Steiner poses the correct analogy; each human being is analogous to an entire species of animal. Accurate but ungainly, the idea never traveled far.

First Order experimental method in single human individuals is called “individual healthcare” and “individual assessment” in conventional medicine. Holistic approaches characteristically customizes patient care many times more than conventional medicine—outside of accident and trauma medicine.

    1. First-Order Science in personal growth

First-Order Science applied to personal growth focuses on bridging communication between the two lower of our Three selves, Conscious Waking Self and Immune System Self. “Inner cooperation” also describes this. “Self-connection” also describes this.

A Skill Ladder of Self-connection Methods exists online. The middle skill, the one most applicable to all methods, self-muscle testing, Muscle Testing 2.0. 20 or more practical methods exist, including dowsing.

Per the discussion of single villi in our small intestine above, self-testing methods are as simple as placing your hand on your heart center and knowing whether choice X is beneficial or not beneficial, for you, at this time.

Dg-STOP arm-pull-down poster

    1. Two recommended methods of self-testing

– Arm-length-testing

– PTS DSS Client-Controlled Testing using two people. However instead of one person being the expert and one person the passive testee, the testee is 100% in charge. Second person is only an arm-pushing-mechanism and makes no comments nor interpretations of results, a kind of confidentiality Testee monitors how hard second epson pushes and makes 100% of all interpretations of what results mean.

Cell-level-intelligence functions primarily in the domain of the body-lifestyle-psyche of single individuals. As John-Roger says, “If it works for you use it, if not, have the with to let it go.” This is EXACTLY what occurs in our small intestine 24/7, deciding whether to take single nutrients into our blood stream–or not.

Given its wide applicability and many beneficial side-effects, self-testing continues to be the most practical, “modern” experimental method for self-connection.

Second Order Science ~

The characteristic general experimental method of Second Order Science is familiar:

Observation > Hypothesis > experiment > New observation > New hypothesis

Used appropriately, Second Order Science is fantastic for learning about, manipulating and creating with material substances of all kinds.

The above experimental method is especially crucial for any and all part-to-whole processes, such as, making your first-ever peanut butter and jelly sandwich, building a car factory assembly line, installing hot and cold running water in homes and so on.

Third-order-science ~

The characteristic general experimental method of third Order Science is patient questioning until a concern has been considered from from the viewpoint of each stakeholder.

Creative imagination is crucial to move out of our own point of view and “walk a mile in the moccasins of another.” Let’s remember parents of children do this daily, mothers and fathers imagining what is best for their child. To do this as adults, with other adults, treats other people as family.

If a lot of people are stakeholders in a decision, meetings run the risk of being long and boring. Best Practices in Group Process encourages leadership to pay explicit and deliberate attention to quality of group process, varying interaction and changing things up to keep things FUN, social and interactive.

Implementing this level of mindfulness consistently was a hard-won lesson in business meetings of teacher-run Waldorf schools in the 1980s worldwide. It’s worth knowing about if you face a similar situation.

    1. All three sciences employ left-brain methods

– Observation and experimental discovery,

– Hypothesis > experiment > new hypothesis

– Reality testing

– While each order of science is active in widely separated frequency-intelligences in our psyche, rigor and precision are still valued.

    1. All three sciences employ right-brain methods

– Imagination-visualization

– Inspiration

– Intuition

  1. Conflict between First and Second Order Science in healthcare simply unnecessary

    1. The genius of Second-Order Science healthcare

Second-Order Science includes math-mechanics, 2 + 2 = 4.

One-third of the science we use every day is the familiar conventional science of conscious-waking-selves, the science of worldly survival and goal-oriented competition. Second-order science is the science we are most schooled to and accustomed to think about.

It’s the science of male patriarchy and masculine domination.

Because Second Order Science is ‘physical-material survival science,’ criteria for ‘what is real and true’ is highest here:

To be “real,” phenomena must be replicable, in all places, at all times, by anyone, regardless of intention or subjective state.

This is the kind of thinking you want, if physical-material survival is your priority.

If something works for everyone human, like breathing oxygen, or drinking clean water, second-order science can make surveys, charts diagrams, maps and handbooks to inform anyone about local water conditions and remedies. This is where observer-spectator, survival-competition science excels.

Second Order Science healthcare excels at accident and trauma medicine. No one can beat it.

    1. The genius of First-Order Science healthcare

First-Order Science is “one person’s meat is another person’ poison;” and, ‘If it works for you, use it. When It stops working for you, have the wit to think outside your own box.’

This is why research reports and cures in holistic healing will always be “anecdotal.” They are logical and workable primarily in the domain of one single individual.

The nature of research and cures at the level of cell-level-intelligence is always anecdotal. It’s always going to be that way; get used to it.

Yes, the anecdotal character of results, reporting and cures in holistic healing remains an embarrassment to Applied Kinesiology, Touch for Health, Total Body Management and Net Mind-Body.

I especially honor the Herculean efforts of Applied Kinesiology, visible on the research portion of their website, to fit anecdotal results onto the Procrustean Bed of Second Order Science criteria: true for ALL people, at ALL times, in ALL places, 100% regardless of subjective intention or state.

A major unintended side-effect of the above Procrustean Bed strategy is; while it makes the iNtuitive Thinking preference types happy, the rigid NT approach and rhetoric drives away the most talented students and practitioners in the speciality, your iNtuitive Feelers.

The above is a short version of why so many holistic modes-methods expanded in the 1980s but in the post-2012 world are shrinking and populated with mainly oldsters, Touch for Health being a textbook example.

Holistic healing and Energy Medicine methods never were, and never will, conform to Second Order Science criteria (one size fits all, or else it’s not science). See the above comment on where Second Order Science criteria is useful in holistic methodologies; for example, Biodynamic garden and crop management, Biodynamic herd management, and agricultural radionics. We have too little Second Order Science in these areas so far.

First-Order Science healthcare excels at wellness, prevention, health enhancement and all modes addressing unresolved negativity in our invisible bodies before it precipitates (trickles down) into physical dis-ease and symptoms. No one can beat it in these areas.

Q: So what do I say when a hard science skeptic criticizes me for employing muscle testing?

A: You suggest they go somewhere else if they are not open-minded. If they are open-minded, see if they are open to reframing non-acute healthcare as primarily relevant, successful and sustainable primarily in the domain of single individuals. What works for one patron may not necessarily work for the next one. Self-testing is simply a tool enabling lines of inquiry otherwise quite expensive to pursue.

The variable effectiveness of holistic and Energy Medicine treatments is especially visible in cancer treatment. The best holistic health-enhancing, cancer-eradicating holistic methods can be used; yet, predicting which person heals from which do not remains—anecdotal, individual, customized.

Allopathic medicine downplays clients “taking personal responsibility.” One-size should fit all. Holistic methods celebrate and more or less demand taking personal responsibility for serious self-healing.

When we hope-expect the same treatment for cancer to work for every patient, we devalue and homogenize the soul in the human experience to the standard of an animal herd.

You can’t have both the dignity and potential majesty of the soul in the human experience and “one size fits all” medicine, where allopathy began so successfully in the 1850s. Only Second-Order survivalist ‘mad science’ wishes one cure to work for all people, at all times, at all places, regardless of subject mood, intention or goal.

In holistic health we start assuming each person is unique, requires customized treatment. This is why holistic approaches tend to be generally more effective dollar for dollar than allopathic treatments—outside of trauma and accident medicine.

    1. Three Selves, Three Sciences

The Three Sciences line up exactly with the Three Selves, one science for each self of our Three Selves, each science corresponding to the domain of one self.

Guess what else? Individuals are characterized by which of the Three Sciences they exercise most-prefer using. Which of these three ways of thinking says a lot about you.

Because people are already very familiar with second-order science, people benefit most by experimenting with sciences One and Three.

    1. Dangers of First Order Science

The archetypal danger is Land of the Lotus Eaters, the danger of NEVER emerging out at all from the wholeness of Nature, staying a child eternally, eternally immature, unable and unwilling to manipulate the environment adequately and sufficiently, for the needs of our self, family and tribe.

At this extreme, applying our intelligence to practical problems is overtaken by merging with Oneness, “ignorance is bliss.”

Another clear danger? Being self-satisfied: “I got mine. Go get yours, buddy.” Selfishness. This is why parents hope their obstreperous two year old develops and grows out of me-me-me-me.

First-Order Science commonly has no math. It’s allied more with our right brain hemisphere. Counting in the domain of three may be its natural limit. This is another reason two expert self-testers testing the same phenomena, at the same time with the same intention, may get results 10% different or greater. Subjectivity is like that, challenging to find measurement methods two people can agree on.

On the god side, this is why Muscle Testing 2.0 was such a revolution in the1990s. As long as users stay in the domain of one single individual, self-testing remains objective and 90% or more replicable in the domain of one person.

    1. Dangers of Second Order Science

The dangers of second-order-science are well-known. Unnecessary and unwarranted abstractions top the list of sins. Our intellect and mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master. “It is not the senses that deceive; it is our judgment that deceives us” ~ Goethe in Lehrs. Among books of science criticism, Lehrs 3rd Ed. outshines all others known to me.

A science of math alone can collects only abstractions about Nature. Looking only at what is true in math, Second-Order Science easily “sees past” Nature, sees only the component pieces of Nature’s Oneness, sees “thru” the face of Nature, misses Her face, Her countenance, Her gaze (Lehrs paraphrase).

For example we tell school children the purpose of plants is to make seeds so new plants can grow next year.

Nonsense. This is Monsanto’s point of view, not a plant’s point of view.

Within First Order Science we realize for a plant there’s little fun in doing the same thing over and over again endlessly?

For annual plants, the purpose of the plant is the flower, to make flowers, to live as a flower, if only for a short time.

The unexpected happens when a flower blossoms. At no time before does an annual plant express perfect geometry. In this it approximates the perfection and sometimes the symmetry of Divine Archetypes.

For a plant, the leaf-leaf-leaf rhythm is all very well and good; yet, as an etheric being each plant also aspires to something more. To what? To the animal kingdom! In its flower, the plant approximates a face, often uses scent, approximates sexual expression with partners close by or at a distance. In flowering and pollination, a plant pantomimes, as best a plant can, the activity of animals.

To anthropomorphize this comically, each year annual plants look forward to producing a flower all out of proportion to making seeds. No plant writes home to mother, “What big seeds I made this year.” Plants are proudest of the flowers they made.

Seeds are a consequence of flowers but compared to the advent of a blossom, more like a practical after-thought, clearly not the main attraction-sensation.

Second-order-science is a terrific fact-finding instrument. It’s not so hot as a means to reunite with Nature and God as our Partners (Lehrs paraphrase).

Chart of Three Sciences

Inevitably math-mechanical Cartesian-Newtonian science will evolve to accept Goethean science. This will shift mainstream culture. The shift will happen first in circles where the shift has the greatest positive practical benefit: holistic health and Energy Medicine practitioners. It will then spread to wider audiences.

A shift from left-brain-only math-mechanical science to whole-brain Goethean science requires movement in our Habit Body, consciously, sub- and unconsciously. First this happens for individuals; later, if books and media about the shift appear, the change happens thru K-12 education. The new paradigm becomes the new accepted pattern.

Making changes consciously, sub- and unconsciously involves several moving parts. If this was easy, we would have done it already during Humanistic Psychology 1.0.

A shift from left-brain-only math-mechanical science to whole-brain Goethean science will attract more of the “best and brightest” as the benefits are great. It can make the whole field more coherent, reliable, credible; and therefore, more profitable.

Goethean Science’s new relevance to Energy Medicine

tree-scarlet-leavesAs adults, we have to grasp the soulfulness of science by first grasping the soulfulness of Nature.

It’s much easier for children to grasp the soulfulness of Nature; hence, Waldorf Nature Stories and Rosicrucian Aquarian Stories for Children, (If you don’t these, worth getting. Full texts available online. First three volumes are best).

For adults already hardened into an intellectual “I am,” inner child work and muscle testing is how to open and widen The Crack in the Cosmic Egg.

When individual adults crack open their own cosmic egg, they begin to perceive the macrocosm within their own microcosm, or in language from the 1920s, perceive the soulfulness of nature again inside themselves; and, as semi-autonomous from their intellect.

The Flower Essence Society repertory book online asserts Goethean science is allied with alchemical/Rosicrucian science. See a pretty good exposition of first-order science-intelligence in the Three Sciences for Three Selves articles on this site.

First-order intelligence, cell-level intelligence, is often contrasted with second-order Cartesian-Newtonian science because the two are in conflict.

In second-order Cartesian-Newtonian science-intelligence, psychology is allotted only symbolic truth, “a disembodied system of symbols existing only in the interior world of the psyche*.” On the other hand, real-world physics and chemistry is deemed a realm of strictly soulless substances. This is what Steiner called “one-sidedness of Platonic thought,” as reported in Lehrs (1951): only one half of our perceived world is alive, the other half is dead, waiting for us to manipulate it productively.

Only in Rosicrucian Alchemy and Goethean Science were vague connections drawn between the living macrocosm of Nature and the living microcosm of inner human experience. The two are in correspondence, not consciously, but only sub- and unconsciously. This is why the connections are challenging for our conscious-waking self to see. Ernst Lehrs also points to Ruskin as having similar insight to Goethe and I agree.

Rosicrucian alchemists correctly intuited how the path of our personal-spiritual growth must unite itself with the external material world. They also correctly intuited this must be some simple experimental method available to the masses. Alchemy was their best guess. In part at least, Alchemy was too allied with black magic to ever catch on with the masses. A Christian natural science experimental method was needed—but what? This gave rise to the gentleman scientists of the 1600s-1700s like Thomas Jefferson. However whatever Goethean advances were made here were quickly co-opted by the Cartesian-Newtonians.

The need and the outline for a new experimental method, intuited but never uncovered by Rosicrucian alchemists, was further clarified by Steiner. There must be some simple experimental method for those wishing to encounter the workings of spiritual laws in the forms and processes of Nature; and thereby, to expand the individual’s knowledge, awareness, connection and intercourse with true spiritual laws and Beings, not perceivable by the five animal senses but perceptible with all 12 senses.

Alas Steiner too was ahead of his time. Time and history had to evolve several more metamorphoses until adequate and sufficient language appeared to fulfill the dreams of Goethe, the Rosicrucian alchemists, Ruskin and Steiner. Continue reading
